As Nigeria moves close to the much awaited general elections, an appeal has gone to the electorates and stakeholders in Ogun State to allow peace to reign before, during and after the elections.

The appeal was contained in a press release signed by the newly elected Chairman of the Ogun State Elders Consultative Forum, Otunba (Dr.) Samuel Jaiyeola Ibikunle in Abeokuta, the state capital.

According to Otunba Ibikunle, “it is our duty as members of the Elders Consultative Forum to ensure that nothing is done to tamper with the peace that Ogun State is noted for from time immemorial.

“Therefore, it is important for all the political parties to educate their supporters to promote a culture of peace and tolerance in all their activities.”

Otunba Ibikunle then warned that there should be no room for violence in any form during political campaigns and during the elections proper, adding that losers at the polls must demonstrate spirit of sportsmanship immediately the results are announced.

Ibikunle also charged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to exhibit commitment to transparent and credible election by ensuring that that the new Electoral Act is implemented to the letter.

He therefore appealed to both the judiciary and the security agencies to handle the electoral issues without bias, while carrying out their duties.

According to him, the judiciary, which is the last hope of the common man, should adjudicate all cases brought before the courts with fairness and without delay.
