Professor Titilayo Ayotunde, a Professor of Demography and Social Statistics at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife has outlined factors that led to insecurity in the country.

Ayotunde postulated that unemployment, religion and ethnicity, political instability and lack of quality education were the bane of insecurity in Nigeria.

Ayotunde made this known in his lecture at the Refuge of Life Foundation’s seventh anniversary and award event in Osogbo on Wednesday.

He revealed that the state of insecurity had gotten to an alarming stage that nobody was safe again until the individual went back to his home.

“Even when you’re back, you’re not sure if seeing the next day. This is the state of the country. We know that there are so many factors that led us to this. We mentioned unemployment as a major factor.

“With the multitude of unemployed youths now in the country both as graduates and artisans have nothing to do. Don’t forget that these are people who want to shout life by all means since they are exposed to many things.”

He recommended that the government and stakeholders put more serious efforts into equipping security agencies to secure lives and properties.

“The youth should be gainfully employed. Government according to their electioneering promises should do all possible to reduce the unemployment rate.”

Bolarinwa Olabode, the Executive Director of the foundation said the rationale behind his gesture was that Osun State had the highest number of out-of-school children in the Southwest geopolitical zone.

He said his foundation was able to fill the gap by telling some children away from the street.

He revealed that his foundation has been able to pay the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) fee for 50 children in Osogbo.

Ayo Ologun, a journalist and awardee called on stakeholders to think on the direction of educationally helping young people.

“This may be one way of ending insecurity in the country and you cannot tell maybe this little support given to the young ones may be all that they need for a prosperous future.”
