Turaki, Arapaja Emerge PDP Chairman, Secretary At Ibadan Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has entered a new phase of leadership renewal following the successful conclusion of its Elective National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, where delegates elected Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as National Chairman and Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja as National Secretary.
The convention, held at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, brought together more than 3,000 delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in what party leaders described as a decisive step toward unity and preparation for the 2027 general elections.
Proceedings began on November 15 and extended into the early hours of November 16, marked by an orderly and transparent electoral process. Senator Ben Obi supervised the voting exercise and guided delegates through an efficient balloting system that reflected the party’s commitment to internal democracy.
Dr. Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, emerged as the consensus candidate after Senator Yakubu Lado withdrew from the race, clearing the path for his near-unanimous victory. His election, delegates said, symbolizes a renewed effort to reposition the PDP for national relevance.
Similarly, Ambassador Arapaja — a former Deputy National Chairman (South) — secured overwhelming support to become the new National Secretary, a role that places him at the administrative heart of the party.
Party stakeholders hailed the convention as historic, noting that the smooth transition of leadership signals the PDP’s readiness to rebuild its structures, close internal ranks, and strengthen its opposition stance ahead of the next electoral cycle.
