The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), describing it as a key pillar in Nigeria’s national security framework.
Speaking at the commissioning of 48 operational vehicles at the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, Ribadu commended the leadership of the agency under Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) for transforming it into a result-oriented force against illicit drugs.
“This event is not just about commissioning vehicles. Without mobility to swiftly reach danger points, intercept traffickers, and move resources where they are most needed, our fight is severely constrained,” the NSA said. “The link between drug trafficking and insecurity is systemic. Criminal gangs and insurgents fund their activities through drug profits, while countless young Nigerians fall victim to addiction.”
Ribadu stressed that President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda places drug control at the heart of national security strategy, citing funding, inter-agency cooperation, and policy support as factors that enabled the procurement of the new vehicles. He urged NDLEA officers to view the development as a call to action to remain vigilant, act within the law, and maintain professionalism.
In his address, NDLEA Chairman/CEO Marwa described the procurement as a milestone that underscores the Tinubu administration’s commitment to equipping frontline security and public health institutions.
“In just two years of President Tinubu’s administration, we have arrested 40,887 drug offenders, including 45 barons; seized over 5.5 million kilograms of illicit substances; destroyed more than 704 hectares of cannabis farms; and secured 8,682 convictions,” Marwa said. “We have also treated and rehabilitated 24,173 drug users and carried out 8,698 sensitisation activities nationwide.”
He noted that the operational boost would help NDLEA counter evolving threats in the illicit drug economy by improving mobility, intelligence, and community engagement.
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, lauded Tinubu’s backing of NDLEA and praised Marwa’s leadership, saying the agency’s morale and performance ranked it among the country’s best-performing institutions.
Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and Director General of the Bureau of Public Procurement, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, also commended the agency’s achievements, with Adedokun describing NDLEA as a model for other government institutions in due process compliance.
Of the vehicles commissioned, 38 SUVs will be deployed to zonal, strategic, and state commands, while 10 sedans will serve NDLEA directorates. The ceremony also featured the decoration of 15 newly promoted commanders of narcotics with the rank of Assistant Commander General of Narcotics (ACGN).
