Son Stabs Nigerian Professor To Death In America

A tragic incident has unfolded in New Orleans, where a 29-year-old Nigerian man, Chukwuebuka Eweni, has been arrested after allegedly stabbing his father and two sisters, resulting in the death of his 75-year-old father, Professor Samuel Eweni, a respected academic at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO).
Authorities confirmed that Chukwuebuka has been charged with one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. The attack took place on Tuesday night inside the family home on Pebble Drive in New Orleans East.
According to police reports, Professor Eweni died from his injuries at the scene. His two daughters, who were also stabbed during the violent encounter, were rushed to hospital. One of them has already been discharged, while the other remains under medical care but is expected to recover.
Family sources quoted by U.S. media described Chukwuebuka as someone who had lived for years with mental health challenges, though he had never shown violent tendencies. They noted that nothing appeared unusual on the evening of the attack, and they remain at a loss as to what might have triggered the sudden outburst.
Following the stabbings, Chukwuebuka reportedly went to New Orleans East Hospital, a facility where he frequently sought mental health treatment. Unaware of the crime, staff transferred him to another medical centre in Jefferson Parish. It was there that detectives located him and took him into custody on Wednesday morning.
SUNO has publicly mourned the loss of Professor Eweni, who was a long-standing member of the university community and a lecturer in the College of Business and Public Administration.
“Dr. Eweni was more than an educator—he was a mentor and a guiding light to so many of our students,” Chancellor Dr. Joseph Bouie Jr. said in a statement. “His contributions to the university’s mission of transforming lives through education will be remembered and celebrated. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this deeply difficult time.”
Professor Eweni’s death is the latest tragedy involving Nigerians in the United States in recent months.
Just last month, U.S. authorities arrested Gbemisola Akayinode, a 36-year-old Nigerian woman in Texas, and charged her with felony murder following the death of her nine-year-old daughter, Oluwasikemi. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the child died of hyperthermia after being left inside a vehicle for several hours on July 1, when temperatures soared to 99°F (37°C).
Investigators reported that Akayinode had left her daughter inside the car while she worked a shift at a manufacturing plant in Galena Park. Court filings allege that the child remained unattended in the vehicle for over eight hours. Although Akayinode left her daughter with water, food, ice, a rechargeable fan, and melatonin to sleep, she partially lowered only the rear windows and covered the windscreen, making the child difficult for passersby to spot.
When she returned to the vehicle shortly before 2 p.m., she found the girl unresponsive and called emergency services. Efforts to revive her were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at LBJ Hospital.
Court documents also indicate that Akayinode had previously taken her daughter to work due to financial constraints and lack of child-care options, although investigators later revealed that her supervisor had been quietly assisting her with day-care expenses. She reportedly blamed prescription medication for her child’s death while admitting to giving the girl melatonin both the previous night and the morning of the incident.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed the arrest on October 17, explaining that the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences classified the death as a homicide resulting from extreme heat exposure.
