Shafaudeen, CRCT Boss, Olagoke, Proffers Solution To Misuse Of Social Media

Worried by the negative use of the social media and its effects on the masses, the Founder and Spiritual Head of the Shafaudeen in Islam Worldwide, Professor Sabit Ariyo Olagoke, JP has called on parents to monitor their children properly to prevent them from being influenced negatively by friends.

Olagoke, who is the President and Initiator of the Centre for Religious Cooperation And Tolerance (CRCT) disclosed this during the annual symposium of the centre titled; “Protect The Youths From Social Media Abuse,” held recently at CRCT Hall, Wakajaye Ibadan, Oyo State.
While enumerating some of the dangers which he said range from hacking, security issues, cyber bullying and time wastage, also identified addiction, health issues, depression and loneliness, distraction and untimely death.
“Social media also aid crime and fraud and fake news is also spread fast by the social media,” he said.
Professor Olagoke, who is also the Mogaji Ogun -Elu, Aare Alasa dynasty, stated that social media have negative impact on children, when they sites that can pollute them morally, spiritually and intellectually.
The cleric however, called on parents to  monitor their children from home and train them in the way of God so that they would not be carried away by the negative effects of the social media.
While speaking on how the menace could be curbed, Olagoke said that most children can be easily influenced in their adolescent stage, especially those with poor parental background, saying that this has become worse in an era of collapsed agents of socialisation.
“It is pertinent that we re-brand Nigeria with due recognition of important institutions and the agents of socialisation. Once the environment is sanitised into a disciplined and corruption free environment, the collaboration of all agents of socialisation will help to revitalise and ensure a durable socialisation process to the status of working tools,” he said.
Alhaji Abdul -Rauf Kamardeen, who spoke on the paper presented by Professor Olagoke from the legal angle, called on the government to put in place a law that will prevent people from using the social media to commit crimes with a stringent penalty for whoever is guilty of using the social media for evil.
Mr. John Teidi, a journalist, who spoke from the media angle, advised the youths to speak up, especially the girl child, if anyone is using the social media to harass them.
A social commentator and activist, Comrade Awa Bamiji, called on  the government to create agencies to institutionalise social media so as to curb the menace of social media abuse.
Dr. Ibraheem Adediran, in his words, called for evaluation and research on how to effectively use the social media for the benefit of the society.
At the end of the event, prizes were awarded to the winners of Olagoke Education Legacy; O-Leg.
In the primary school category;
Akinrinola Toluwanimi of Faith International School, Oyo came first with 65 percent, while Akorede Azeenat from Muslim Model College, NTC, Ibadan, came second with 63 points.
Adenuga Shamsudeen of Shafaudeen Comprehensive School and Oparinde Mofidat came third and fourth with 62 and 61 points respectively.
In the secondary school category, Olurode Abdul-Razak of Wings College, Iwo, Osun State came first with 77 percent, while Adebayo Ridwan of Isale Oyo Community Grammar School and Adeoti Judah of Baptist Medical secondary Centre  came second with 76 points.
Also, Adeleye Aliyu Akinkunmi of Yejide School came third with 73 points, while Adedoyin Samuel of Community Grammar School, Lalupon took the fourth position with 72 points.
