The Rivers State University management on Friday ordered the immediate suspension of the ongoing student week festivities due to the untimely death of a student during the Jean funfair celebrations.
The Registrar of the university, Dr. Sydney Enyindah, announced the suspension of other activities marking the students week in an internal memo sighted by our correspondent in Port-Harcourt on Friday.
According to the memo, “Following the unfortunate and sad incident which occurred during the jeans carnival resulting in the death of a student, the Management of the University has directed the immediate suspension of the remaining activities of the Student Union Week.”
We learned that a student who has yet to be identified died as a result of reckless driving during the Jean carnival organised by the Rivers State University students union government to commemorate this year’s students week.
A source inside the university community, said that the student who was allegedly sitting on the window of a racing vehicle fell during the jean carnival and was rushed to the hospital, where he eventually died.
The administration also directed Acting Chief Security Officer to execute the suspension immediately.
“As a result, the Acting Chief Security Officer is hereby directed to ensure that all University students comply with this directive as soon as possible.”
Students’ week is a yearly event in Nigerian institutions.
“There is no set time or month, but when the time comes, the students’ body decides when it shall take place. The students’ body, in collaboration with the university administration, decides when it will take place,” he said.
