Protesters Storm Lagos Assembly, Seek Urgent Intervention Over Land Grabbing

Residents of Elerangbe, Okeogun Bale in the Ibeju-Lekki axis of Lagos State have appealed for intervention from the Lagos State House of Assembly over land grabbing in the community.

Armed with a petition titled: “Crisis On Okeogun Baale Community, Ibeju Lekki Local Government, Lagos State by Land Grabbers,” the protesters lamented that they have been living in fear.

Spokesperson for the community and Baale of Okeogun, Chief Shakiru Adebola Elemoro, said that the community had been under intense siege coupled with disturbances by land grabbers who have taken over the area.

Elemoro added that in one of the instances, one Mr. Abiodun Raji (deceased) was brutally shot dead in broad daylight by the land grabbers.

According to him, necessary complaints were made to the security authorities, yet nothing was done about the suspect.

He noted however, that the community believes that justice would be served.

“We also urge the State Government to come to our aid and treat Okeogun village matter with urgency,” he appealed.

He said, the protest was the third embarked upon by the community and that letters had been submitted by land owners at Okeogun village.

“Till date, nothing has been done to stop the horrific incidents except that the Ministry of Physical Planning came to take action by stopping the land grabbers from further construction of work but they refused to stop,” he said.

While receiving the protesters on behalf of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Obasa, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Noheem Adams, commended their peaceful action.

Hon. Adams also assured them that their petition will be given necessary attention by the Speaker, while urging them to remain law-abiding residents of the State.
