In a disturbing escalation of the ongoing tensions between farmers and herders in Plateau State, the government has ordered a full investigation into the alleged poisoning of 36 cows in Zanwar, Bassa Local Government Area. The incident, which has stirred concern across the state, is believed to be linked to the long-standing land and grazing disputes plaguing the region.

According to Ya’u Idris, Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Bassa, the animals consumed what appeared to be poisonous garden eggs scattered around grazing fields near Tafi Gana junction. He urged the Fulani community to remain calm, assuring that security forces are actively involved in the matter.

Police authorities confirmed that 33 cows died in the incident. A high-level delegation including the Deputy Inspector General of Police and the State Commissioner of Police visited the area, offering condolences to the cattle owner, Sama’ila Nuhu, and calling for restraint.

In response, the Plateau State Government has mobilized its Ministry of Livestock Development, Veterinary Services, and Fisheries to collect samples and determine the cause of death. Government spokesperson Joyce Ramnap reiterated the administration’s commitment to justice and peaceful coexistence, urging all parties to avoid provocative rhetoric.

The incident comes just a day after Governor Caleb Mutfwang visited the same region to offer condolences for a deadly bandit attack that claimed over 50 lives, underscoring the fragility of peace in Plateau’s rural communities.

With investigations underway, the government promises accountability, dialogue, and long-term solutions to prevent further escalation in the volatile region.
