Old Wounds, New Fire: Indimi Twins Drag Aisha Buhari Back Into Family Storm

A renewed storm has broken out on Nigerian social media following a series of incendiary Instagram posts linked to the controversial Indimi twins, reopening a bitter and long-running feud with former First Lady Dr Aisha Buhari and thrusting a deeply personal family dispute back into the public spotlight.

The posts, which circulated widely in recent days, were shared via @diabetetwins, an Instagram account operated by Zara Indimi, and @twentyoneparkabj, another account allegedly linked to her twin sister, Ameena Indimi. The sisters are daughters of Maiduguri-based oil billionaire Mohammed Indimi.

The content featured strongly worded personal attacks directed at an unnamed “five-month widow” widely speculated online to be a reference to the former First Lady alongside warnings of further public disclosures, including threats to release a documentary should an apology not be issued.

The posts also referenced an alleged attempt by a “powerful cabal” to force Aisha Buhari and her children out of the Presidential Villa during her husband’s tenure. The claim, which appeared to echo themes raised in a recently published book on the former president’s time in office, has not been independently verified.

A Feud Traced to a Presidential Wedding
The latest online confrontation revives a feud that first entered public view in 2016, during the wedding of Ahmed Indimi, son of Mohammed Indimi, to Zahra Buhari, daughter of then President Muhammadu Buhari.

Multiple reports at the time stated that several of Ahmed Indimi’s sisters including the twins and another sister, Rahama were barred from attending portions of the wedding ceremony held inside the Presidential Villa.

The exclusion was reportedly ordered by Aisha Buhari following disagreements over protocol, access, and conduct during traditional wedding rites.

Accounts from that period said tensions escalated after the twins allegedly attempted to record parts of the ceremony with a mobile phone, leading to a confrontation involving security personnel. The incident reportedly culminated in their exclusion from the main event, fuelling deep resentment and a public fallout between the two families.

In the days that followed the wedding, the twins were reported to have taken to social media to criticise the then First Lady, using disparaging language and questioning her role in the wedding arrangements posts that further inflamed the dispute.

Explosive Allegations Trigger Backlash
While the recent Instagram posts revisited longstanding grievances linked to the wedding incident, one post escalated the dispute further by making a highly sensitive and unsubstantiated allegation of an inappropriate personal relationship involving Aisha Buhari and a senior member of the Indimi family.

The allegation made without evidence, has not been corroborated by any independent source, and immediately sparked backlash online, with critics describing it as defamatory and reckless.

The fallout from the 2016 wedding reportedly strained relations between the twins and their brother Ahmed Indimi, who was widely perceived to have aligned with his wife and the Buhari family during the dispute. That perceived loyalty deepened fractures within the Indimi family, tensions observers say have never fully healed.

Separate from the Buhari-related dispute, the Indimi family has in recent years remained in the public eye due to internal legal battles involving the twins and their billionaire father over dividends and ownership stakes in Oriental Energy Resources, underscoring broader divisions within the powerful family.

As of the time of filing this report, Aisha Buhari has not responded publicly to the latest Instagram posts or the allegations contained in them. Representatives for the Indimi twins have also not issued an official statement, and no legal action has been announced by any of the parties involved.

Despite the silence, the posts continue to dominate online conversations, reigniting debate over the limits of social media expression, the ethics of airing private family grievances publicly, and the enduring consequences of unresolved disputes involving prominent families.

For now, the claims remain unverified, but the episode has once again shown how old wounds once reopened online can quickly ignite a national controversy.
