NYSC Official Detained As Corps Member Dies In Ogun

An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, is in police custody following the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, in Abeokuta.

Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly died on Tuesday after developing complications linked to a terminated pregnancy. She has since been buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape–Sagamu Road.

Her death has stirred unease within the NYSC community, with questions emerging over welfare, supervision, and the nature of relationships between officials and corps members.

Sources familiar with the case allege that Olalekan, the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South, had a personal relationship with Ariyo, which may have led to the pregnancy and its termination. Police sources said he is being held at the Ogun State Police Command headquarters in Eleweran while investigations continue.

One source also pointed to the ethical concerns surrounding any relationship between a supervising officer and a corps member under their authority, noting that such conduct, if proven, could amount to serious misconduct.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that the case has been taken over by the State Criminal Investigation Department. Its spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said that Ariyo’s death is under investigation and declined to comment on the reported arrest or the allegations.

As of press time, the NYSC in Ogun State had yet to issue an official statement.
