Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi in Induced Coma Following Abdominal Surgery

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma to aid his recovery after undergoing emergency abdominal surgery.
The 27-year-old Nigerian international sustained the injury during Forest’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday, colliding with the goalpost in the 88th minute. Despite receiving treatment on the pitch, Awoniyi continued playing in visible discomfort, as the club had exhausted all available substitutions.
On Monday evening, Awoniyi was rushed to the hospital after the full extent of the injury was confirmed. Nottingham Forest has since stated that he is “recovering well” post-surgery. The decision to place him in an induced coma was made to limit physical movement and stabilize his heart rate during the critical early stages of recovery.
Club owner Evangelos Marinakis voiced his frustration over the situation, questioning the medical team’s decision to allow Awoniyi to continue playing after the initial incident.
“The seriousness of Taiwo Awoniyi’s injury is a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game and why a player’s health and well-being must always come first,” said Marinakis. “There was shared frustration that the medical team should never have allowed the player to continue.”
Although Awoniyi’s condition is not considered life-threatening, the incident has sent shockwaves through the football community. Support has poured in from fans, fellow professionals, and clubs across the globe, all wishing him a full and speedy recovery.
