Nigerian Boxing Legend Obisia Nwankpa Dies At 75

Nigerian boxing has been thrown into mourning following the death of legendary pugilist, Obisia “Golden Gloves” Nwankpa, who passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the age of 75.

The former Nigerian and African champion, widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers to come out of Africa, was an Olympian who represented Nigeria at the 1972 Munich Games. He rose to continental and global prominence in the 1970s and 80s, thrilling fans with his skill, speed, and ring intelligence.

Nwankpa clinched gold at the 1973 All-Africa Games held in Lagos and followed it up with another gold medal at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand. He went on to win the Nigerian Lightweight title, the African Boxing Union (ABU) Lightweight title, and the Commonwealth Lightweight Championship during a storied professional career. At the height of his career, he became the number one contender for the WBC Light-Welterweight Title and famously challenged American champion Saoul Mamby.

Known affectionately as “Golden Gloves,” Obisia’s influence extended beyond the ring. After retiring from active competition, he served as head coach of Nigeria’s national boxing team, guiding them through the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. His mentorship helped nurture a new generation of Nigerian boxers and cemented his legacy as a pillar of the sport.

In recent years, Nwankpa had battled dementia and other health-related challenges. His condition was brought to public attention in September 2024 when he made a rare appearance at the National Gym in Surulere, Lagos. At the time, it was reported that he could no longer speak or recognize longtime friends and colleagues.

Tributes have poured in from across the sporting world. President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C), Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, described Obisia as “a national treasure” and pledged support for his family. “He deserves to be in Nigeria’s Sports Hall of Fame,” Ladipo said. “His contributions to boxing and sports in general are immeasurable.”

Nwankpa’s death marks the end of an era for Nigerian boxing. He leaves behind a rich legacy of excellence, discipline, and service to sport.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by his family.
