New Awujale: Abiodun Tasks Awujale Chiefs on Fair Succession Process

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has urged the Awujale Chiefs in Council to ensure a transparent and level playing ground in the process of selecting a new Awujale of Ijebuland.

The stool became vacant following the passing of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, after a remarkable reign of more than 65 years.

Speaking after a meeting with the Awujale Chiefs in Council at his country home in Iperu, Governor Abiodun emphasized the urgency of filling the vacant stool, stressing that “nature abhors a vacuum.” He assured that his administration would support any candidate presented by the kingmakers at the conclusion of the nomination process.

“The process of installing another Awujale has started. That was also what we discussed,” the governor said. “The pathway to having in place a regency is the pathway to ensuring that all the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed, and that all the processes enshrined in the Laws of Ijebuland are strictly followed. I must say that all of us agreed we are on the same page, and this will put paid to all the rumours making the rounds.”

Governor Abiodun expressed optimism that the succession process would be rancour-free, adding that every aspirant to the throne would be given equal opportunity. He described members of the Awujale Council as respected personalities who contributed to the late monarch’s long and peaceful reign.

“I had to first wait for the 40 days of mourning to pass before calling this meeting,” the governor noted. “What is most important is that the chiefs are deeply committed and dedicated. I appreciate them. The Council is intact, with no disharmony among them. There is no pluralization; they are working hand in glove, and I thank them.”

Also speaking, the Olootu Olowa and Deputy Chairman of the Council, Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso, reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to peace-building and unity, assuring that members would continue to work together for the peace and progress of Ijebuland.
