NEDC Backs Bago’s Solar Push, Hails 24-Hour Power for 180 Niger Communities

The Niger Electricity Distribution Company (NEDC) has applauded the Niger State Government for its bold deployment of solar mini-grids and renewable energy solutions across previously unserved and underserved communities, describing the initiative as a transformative step toward inclusive electrification.

The company, a subsidiary of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC), commended Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago for spearheading the rollout of reliable 24-hour solar power to more than 180 communities that had endured over a decade without meaningful electricity supply.

Beyond rural electrification, the state government has also transitioned key public institutions to independent solar systems. These include the Government House, the General Hospital, the IBB Specialist Hospital, the Niger State Water Board, and several Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), significantly reducing dependence on conventional grid supply.

Managing Director of AEDC, Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, described the initiative as complementary to the national decentralisation drive under the Electricity Act 2023.

“We fully support the Niger State Government’s proactive approach to expanding access to reliable electricity through renewables. These efforts demonstrate how collaboration between government, regulators, and licensed operators can accelerate progress for customers,” he said.

Chief Business Officer and Acting Managing Director of NEDC, Engr. Sam Odekina, affirmed the company’s readiness to partner with the state under the regulatory oversight of the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NSERC).

“The deployment of solar mini-grids in previously unserved areas aligns perfectly with our shared goal of inclusive electrification. As the licensed intrastate distributor, NEDC is eager to collaborate on hybrid solutions, grid integration where feasible, and innovative projects that deliver sustainable benefits to residents and businesses,” Odekina stated.

The solar initiative, which covers areas such as Lambata in Gurara Local Government Area, is being implemented in collaboration with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and supported by development partners. It aligns with the decentralised, multi-source electricity framework enabled by the Electricity Act 2023 and the establishment of NSERC.

NEDC reiterated its commitment to exploring commercially viable grid extensions, seamless integration of mini-grids within the state licensing regime, and public-private partnerships aimed at accelerating electrification and driving economic growth.

The company emphasised that sustained collaboration between the state government, regulators, and operators would enhance livelihoods, strengthen energy security, stimulate industrial development, and build a more resilient power future for the people of Niger State.
