Mysterious Deaths of Four Female Lagos Officials Spark Urgent Calls for Investigation

By Ademola Adekusibe
Lagos State is facing an unprecedented and alarming situation, as four female elected officials—all sworn into office on July 10, 2025—have died within a span of just two months. The sudden loss of these public servants has sent shockwaves through the political landscape and raised pressing questions about the safety of officeholders in the state.
The officials who have passed away include: Oluwakemi Rufai, Councillor for Ibeju-Lekki (died August 13); Zainab Shotayo, Councillor for Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA (died August 18); Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose, Vice Chairman of Badagry West LCDA (died September 20); and Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, Councillor for Shomolu (died September 21).
The rapid succession of deaths has ignited concerns among residents, political analysts, and civil society organizations, who are demanding clarity and accountability. No official investigation has been announced to determine the causes of these fatalities.
“This is unprecedented. Four female officials dying within two months cannot be ignored,” said a Lagos political observer who requested anonymity. “The government must act swiftly to investigate and reassure the public that holding office is safe.”
Security sources confirmed that preliminary reports are being compiled, but no formal statement or probe has been issued to the public. The Lagos State Government has yet to release details on possible causes of death or indicate whether the incidents are connected.
As of Monday, the four deaths remain unexplained, and authorities have not confirmed whether they are linked. Residents and political stakeholders continue to call for an immediate investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the officials’ deaths.
