Vice President Kashim Shettima, on Monday afternoon, paid a solemn condolence visit to the former First Lady, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, in London, following the passing of her husband, former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Vice President, who arrived at the Buhari residence in the UK capital in the company of a small delegation, was received by Mrs. Buhari and other members of the late president’s immediate family. The visit was part of the federal government’s expression of solidarity with the bereaved family during this period of national mourning.

Speaking during the visit, Vice President Shettima conveyed the heartfelt condolences of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian government, and the people of Nigeria to the former First Lady and her family. He described the late President Buhari as a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history—an austere statesman, a disciplined leader, and a committed patriot whose legacy will endure for generations.

“President Buhari was more than a leader—he was a symbol of integrity and national rebirth. His passing is a monumental loss not only to your family but to the entire nation he served with dedication,” Shettima said.

Mrs. Buhari, visibly emotional, expressed deep appreciation for the visit and the outpouring of love and support her family has received since the news of the former president’s death broke. She recounted her late husband’s unwavering commitment to public service and his desire for a more united and secure Nigeria.

The Vice President also signed the condolence register, where he paid tribute to Buhari’s years of service, both as military Head of State (1983–1985) and as a democratically elected President (2015–2023). He noted that history will remember him for his fight against corruption, his infrastructural drive, and his efforts to reposition Nigeria on the global stage.

Before departing, Shettima offered prayers for the repose of the former president’s soul and for strength and comfort for his widow, children, and grandchildren.

President Muhammadu Buhari died at the age of 81 after a brief illness. His death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from global leaders, African heads of state, and citizens from all walks of life who remember him as a resolute and disciplined figure who shaped Nigeria’s political landscape for decades.
