With the Lagos local government elections scheduled for Saturday, July 12, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has charged All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates from the Lagos West Senatorial District to ramp up grassroots engagements and campaign efforts to ensure a sweeping victory at the polls.

Obasa gave the charge during a meeting held Tuesday at the Assembly complex with all APC chairmanship, vice-chairmanship, and councillorship candidates from Lagos West. He emphasized the importance of vigorous, last-mile campaigning and personal interactions with voters across communities, irrespective of religion or ethnicity.

“Don’t rest on the party’s strength alone. Mobilize, knock on doors, and engage every member of your communities,” the Speaker said. He also advised candidates to closely monitor and coordinate their campaign teams, stressing the need for accountability and strategic planning.

To further demonstrate his commitment, the Speaker made generous financial contributions to support the candidates’ campaign efforts and assured them of the Assembly’s unwavering support during and after the elections.

Obasa also urged the candidates to approach public office with a service-oriented mindset. “Your focus should be on serving your constituents with integrity and dedication. Respect for democratic institutions and transparency in governance is key,” he stated.

Highlighting the peculiarity of the Lagos governance model, the Speaker pointed out that Lagos remains one of the few states in Nigeria that grants local government chairmen a four-year tenure—providing stability for grassroots development initiatives.

The session ended with a renewed sense of purpose among the candidates as they prepared to intensify door-to-door campaigns ahead of the polls.

Meanwhile, during plenary later in the day, the Lagos State House of Assembly passed two significant bills to second reading: the Lagos State Railway Corporation Bill and the IBILE Energy Corporation Bill.

Presenting the Railway Corporation Bill, Majority Leader Hon. Noheem Babatunde Adams (Eti-Osa Constituency I) explained that the bill aims to establish a fully functional and efficient railway transport system for Lagos State. “South Africa has over 20,000 km of railway lines compared to Nigeria’s 3,798 km. As Africa’s second-largest city economy, Lagos must lead in modern rail innovation,” he said.

Similarly, the IBILE Energy Corporation Bill seeks to revolutionize Lagos’ energy sector by attracting investments and fostering innovation. According to Hon. Sobur Oluwa, Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, the bill represents a transformative step in repositioning the state’s energy landscape.

Speaker Obasa lauded both bills, noting that their passage would significantly enhance infrastructure and economic growth. He subsequently referred the Railway Bill to the House Committee on Transportation, and the Energy Bill to the Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, directing both committees to submit their reports promptly.

With legislative momentum building and the local elections approaching, the Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to development-driven governance and institutional reforms that benefit Lagosians across all levels.
