Lekki Auto Dealers Union Clarifies Demolition Exercise, Distances Itself from Misinformation

The Lekki Automobile Dealers Union has broken its silence on the ongoing demolition and structure clearance exercise being conducted by the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources along the Lekki–Ajah corridor an operation that has notably affected several car dealerships, including the popular Ola of Lagos Cars Stand.

In an official public notice issued on Sunday, the union emphasized that the exercise is a government-led initiative aimed at improving environmental safety, drainage management, and infrastructure planning within the state. The union affirmed that stakeholders were notified well in advance and were provided with both a grace period and support to relocate vehicles from the affected spaces.

“We would like to state clearly that this is a government-led initiative and an important step towards improving environmental safety and infrastructure management within our community and state,” the statement read.

Expressing appreciation, the union lauded the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, and the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, for their “understanding, communication, and coordination” throughout the process, which they described as smooth and respectful.

The statement further stressed that the clearance was necessary to prevent flooding and reduce risks posed by high-tension electrical cables in the area, dismissing claims circulating on social media that the exercise was politically motivated or targeted at specific businesses.

“We categorically dissociate ourselves from any malicious and misinformed narratives about the ongoing exercise which have been released on some social media platforms,” the union stated.

Addressing their customers, the union appealed for patience and understanding, acknowledging that the exercise might cause temporary disruptions in services. They assured the public that efforts were ongoing to restore full operations as soon as possible.

“We remain committed to delivering the quality service and trust that you have always associated with us,” the union concluded.

The clarification comes amid widespread online reactions and misinformation surrounding the clearance of car lots along the Lekki–Ajah axis, with several viral videos showing bulldozers dismantling structures in the area.

With this statement, the Lekki Automobile Dealers Union aims to reassure both customers and the public that the demolition is part of a broader urban renewal and safety initiative, not an attack on legitimate businesses.
