In a decisive move against violent crime, the Lagos State Police Command has arrested a notorious serial killer and gang leader, Wasiu Akinwande, popularly known as Olori Eso, after over a decade-long manhunt.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Akinwande, aged 44, was apprehended on Friday, June 20, 2025, at a hideout in the Agbado area of neighbouring Ogun State. His arrest was the result of a special tactical operation code-named Silence, Speed and Surprise, executed by the command’s Tactical Squad.

Describing Akinwande as the most wanted suspect in Lagos in recent years, Hundeyin said his capture marks a “significant breakthrough” in the command’s relentless battle against violent crimes, especially in the Mushin axis of the state where he and his gang allegedly operated for years.

“For over a decade, from 2009 to 2024, Wasiu Akinwande and his criminal gangs terrorised communities, particularly in Mushin, executing a string of armed robberies, cult-related killings, kidnappings, and cold-blooded murders,” Hundeyin said.

The suspect was said to have instilled fear across communities and posed an ongoing threat to law and order, escaping law enforcement across multiple states before finally being captured.

Police operatives also raided Akinwande’s residence in Mushin, where they recovered a large cache of weapons and incriminating materials. Items recovered include:

  • 2 AK-47 rifles
  • 1 K2 Assault rifle
  • 1 Red Ryder rifle
  • 3 pump-action rifles
  • 2 locally made single-barrel pistols
  • 5 magazines
  • 57 live cartridges
  • 70 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition
  • 27 rounds of 9mm ammunition
  • 1 expended 5.56mm round
  • 1 dagger
  • 3 walkie-talkies
  • 9 international passports belonging to different individuals

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to lead a team of elite detectives to expand the investigation and arrest all accomplices connected to the suspect.

Already, four families have reportedly identified Akinwande as the man behind the murder of their children or wards.

While commending the bravery and professionalism of officers involved in the operation, CP Jimoh reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents.

“Let this serve as a strong warning to all criminals—Lagos is not a safe haven for you. We remain resolute in our mission to flush out criminal elements and safeguard lives and property,” the Commissioner stated.

He also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station, assuring that investigations will be thorough and the outcomes made public.

Akinwande remains in police custody under heavy security as investigations continue and preparations are underway for his prosecution.
