Mr Biodun Coker, a leading aspirant for the Lagos Island Local Government chairmanship, has said that he understands the challenges faced by residents and traders in the area.
Coker, a young chartered accountant, tax consultant, and entrepreneur, stated during his official declaration to contest for the chairmanship in the July 12 election.
He pledged to bring comfort and ease to every resident and trader if elected as the APC’s flag-bearer and eventually the council chairman.
Appreciating the large turnout for his declaration, Coker, born and raised in Lagos Island, assured the people that he would not betray their trust.
“I officially declare my intention today, April 24, to run for chairman of Lagos Island under our party, APC.
“Seeing over 2,500 people here reassures me that I have their support and votes,” Coker said.
He acknowledged the area’s numerous problems, stating that his team had already worked to address some challenges in their own way.
“We are not just talking; we mean well for Lagos Island. The people deserve the very best,” he said, referencing his “Irorunde IMPACT Manifestos.”
“In the manifesto, I stands for Infrastructure and Revenue Growth; M for Market Development and Food Security; P for Public Health and Sanitation; A for Access to Quality Education and Digital Literacy.
“C represents Community Development, Social Welfare, and Security, while T focuses on Tourism and Culture.
“You can challenge me on this covenant after one year. Hold me accountable if I fail to deliver,” Coker said.
He promised that he is committed to introducing digital literacy to all public primary schools with at least 20 computers in each.
“We will upgrade all public schools and healthcare centres, and establish the Irorun Scholarship Scheme,” he added.
Coker also addressed the needs of the elderly, youths, market traders, people with disabilities, and artisans, pledging to meet their needs.
He noted his previous initiatives, including empowering 790 young people with digital literacy, enrolling 1,000 in a health insurance scheme, and donating an ICT centre to Edward Blyden Memorial School.
In his address, Mr Muftau Oladele-Taiwo, Chairman of Eko Pathfinders, urged the crowd to begin mobilising for Coker’s election victory, highlighting his philanthropic work.
“I thank God for this crowd. You have made the right choice in supporting Biodun Coker. We must remain unwavering in our support,” Oladele-Taiwo said.
Mr Festus Okundiri (Tokunbo), speaking on behalf of Ndigbo in Lagos Island, assured that the Igbos would mobilise over 5,000 votes for Coker when he becomes the party’s candidate.
“We are backing him and mobilising people from markets like Balogun, Idumota, and Jankara, He is a grassroots democrat, and we love him,” Okundiri said.
Coker’s father, Alhaji Abdul-bakri Yemisi-Cokers, thanked the crowd for their support, adding, “He is a proud son, and he will serve you well.”
The rally, held at the Oluwole area of Lagos Island, saw Coker’s supporters and APC members march through various markets on the island.
