Lagos Assembly Holds Stakeholders Meeting On A Bill To Improve Rail Transportation

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Wednesday held a stakeholders meeting on a Bill For a Law to establish the Lagos State Railway Corporation to improve the rail transportation system in Lagos State and for connected purposes.
The event, which held at the Lateef Jakande Auditorium, Assembly Complex was graced by Hon. Osafile Foluke (Amuwo Odofin-1) Hon. Bonu Solomon Saanu(Badagry-1) Rt.Hon Lasbat Meranda Mojisola (Apapa-1) among many others.
Also at the event were members of the Safety Corps, the Commissioner for Transportation among others.
Rt. Hon Mojisola Lasbat, who represented the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon Dr Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, in her welcome address, said that she was delighted to be at the event
The Deputy Speaker added that the gathering underscored the commitment of the legislature to participatory governance through stakeholder engagement and public scrutiny.
“At this stage of the legislative process, we open the bill to expert evaluation and citizens’ contribution to ensure transparency, and inclusiveness in our lawmaking,” she said.
Also speaking, Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Hon. Temitope Adewale, explained that the event followed the bill’s second reading sponsored by the Majority Leader, Hon. Noheem Adams (Eti-Osa I).
He said that the initiative would strengthen Lagos’ intermodal transport system and help decongest the state’s roads.
“The goal is to make mass transit more efficient and accessible to all Lagosians, ensuring all transport systems are properly connected,” Adewale noted.
He further clarified that the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) would retain its role as the regulatory body overseeing the state’s transport sector.
He said: “The interpretation of the program is that charges other than rates and fares means demurrage, dues, fees, storage, terminals, and tools, and any other charges not being rates or fares for any services performed, facility provided, penalty imposed, or license permit or certificate granted, and for this definition.
“The establishment of the corporation, hereby established a body to be known as the Lagos State Railway Corporation (LASRAWCO). This law is about the corporation, which shall be responsible for the operation, management, and development of the railway system in Lagos State
“The objectives of the corporation shall be to provide efficient and reliable railway transportation services within Lagos State at large
“Implement sustainable and environmentally friendly railway projects and promote economic growth and development through improved connectivity
“This Bill is hereby, reassuring Lagosians that the transportation system in Lagos State is becoming a stress-free zone for all.”
