Lagos Assembly Calls For Bye-Elections To Fill Vacant Council Seats

In a bid to fill the vacant seats of some deceased councilors who passed on after being sworn into Office in the Local Government and Local Government Development areas, the Lagos State House of Assembly has called for the conduct of bye-elections to fill the vacant council seats.

The affected Local Governments and Local Council Development Area are: Odi-Olowo. Somolu, and Ibeju-Lekki Local Government.

Raising this under matter of Urgent Public Importance, Hon. Nureni Akinsanya urged the House to formally request that the Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to direct the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to conduct bye-elections in the affected Local Governments and Local Council Development areas.

He emphasized that the wards affected should not be deprived of adequate representation and the attendant opportunities within their respective Local Governments and LCDAs.

In his ruling, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to formally write to the Governor, requesting him to direct Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission LASIEC to make the necessary arrangements and provisions for the conduct of the bye-elections in the affected LG/LCDAs.

Subsequently, the lawmakers also mourn with the people of Badagry, over the passing of the Permanent Vice Chairman of Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Aholu Babatunde Akran who was Wheno-Aholu Toyi 1, a position he held till his Demise at age 89.

The Speaker thereafter directed the Clerk to write a condolence letter to the people of Badagry to sympathise with them.
