Labour Party Gives Peter Obi 48 Hours To Resign Over Coalition Move

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, demanding that he formally resign from the party following his involvement with a new political coalition.

Obi was unveiled on Wednesday as a key figure in the newly formed coalition spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The alliance is aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Reacting to the development, LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, in a statement issued Thursday in Abuja, condemned the coalition as a gathering of “power mongers” and accused Obi of maintaining dual political loyalties.

“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party. We’re also aware that a number of them have refused to defect with him,” Ifoh said.

The party’s leadership warned that failure to comply with the ultimatum could result in disciplinary measures.
