Kano Transport Commissioner Resigns Over Drug Bail Scandal

In a dramatic political twist, Kano State’s Commissioner for Transportation, Alhaji Ibrahim Namadi, has tendered his resignation just hours after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf received the findings of a probe into his controversial role in the bail of a suspected drug baron.
The resignation, announced through a statement issued by Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the Director General, Media and Publicity to the Governor, marked a swift political fallout from the incident that had cast a shadow on the state government’s anti-drug crusade.
Namadi, while insisting on his innocence, said his resignation was a difficult but necessary step taken in the interest of public trust.
“As a member of an administration that has consistently championed the fight against the sales and consumption of illicit drugs, it behoves me to take this step—painful as it may be,” he stated.
“While I maintain my innocence, I cannot ignore the weight of public perception and the need to protect the values we have collectively built.”
The embattled commissioner thanked Governor Yusuf for the opportunity to serve and reaffirmed his loyalty to the administration’s ideals.
“I must, as a good citizen, strive to protect, preserve, and uphold the trust and vision we have worked so hard to instil in our dear state. I remain loyal to the ideals that brought this administration into office.”
Governor Abba Yusuf, according to the same statement, accepted the resignation and wished Namadi well. He also restated his administration’s zero-tolerance policy on drug-related crimes and social vices.
The governor used the occasion to send a stern reminder to political appointees, urging them to exercise caution and seek proper clearance before getting involved in sensitive public matters.
Namadi’s resignation followed the formal presentation of an investigative report to the governor by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim. The report outlined key findings of the committee tasked with probing the commissioner’s involvement in the bail of Sulaiman Danwawu, a suspected drug trafficker.
Among the revelations:
- Namadi voluntarily applied to stand surety for the accused on July 18, 2025.
- He swore to an affidavit of means and expressed full understanding of the court’s bail requirements.
- The committee found that he failed to exercise due diligence in offering surety for a suspect facing serious narcotics charges.
- While there was no prior relationship or evidence of financial inducement, the commissioner acted with full knowledge of the gravity of the allegations against the accused.
- The commissioner did not deposit any money for bail; the arrangement relied solely on the defendant’s affidavit.
The committee concluded that Namadi’s action violated the government’s firm stance against drug trafficking and undermined public trust.
Governor Yusuf commended the panel for its professionalism and objectivity, assuring that the recommendations would be reviewed and followed in line with due process.
“This administration remains firmly committed to transparency, justice, and discipline in public service,” the governor declared, “and we will not relent in our fight against drug-related crimes and social misconduct threatening the future of our youth.”
