The Federal Government’s launch of the Renewed Hope Nigeria First Policy is a watershed moment in our nation’s journey towards economic sovereignty and sustainable growth.

This bold initiative, approved by the Federal Executive Council and awaiting an Executive Order, places Nigerian goods, services, and know-how at the heart of all government procurement and spending decisions.

As Information Minister Mohammed Idris aptly put it, “This new direction places Nigeria, not foreign companies or imports, at the centre of our national development strategy”.

BUILDING ON A PROUD LEGACY

Historically, Nigeria has championed Afrocentric and self-reliant policies-from the indigenization decrees of the 1970s to the Local Content Act in the oil and gas sector.

Yet, the Nigeria First Policy is remarkable for its scope and ambition: it mandates all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to prioritize local options, echoing global best practices like the US “America First” doctrine, but tailored to our unique context.

WHY THIS POLICY MATTERS

It will overhaul how government spends public funds, ensuring that every kobo invested directly benefits Nigerian industries and workers. By prioritizing local content, the policy will drive job creation, industrial growth, and economic diversification.

It seeks to instill confidence in Nigerian products and foster a culture of self-belief and national pride.

The multiplier effects include increased foreign exchange stability, social cohesion, and a more resilient economy.

ENSURING LASTING IMPACT

For the Nigeria First Policy to succeed, implementation must be as robust as its vision:

MONITORING AND COMPLIANCE: Establish a dedicated monitoring team at the federal and sub-national levels to track compliance and measure real impact. “What gets measured, gets managed.”

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT: Create accessible platforms where local producers can obtain up-to-date information on procurement opportunities and product standards.

GUARDING AGAINST SABOTAGE: Implement strict controls and transparent processes to deter unpatriotic elements and importers who may seek to undermine the policy’s objectives.

A CALL TO ACTION

Let us remember, as President Tinubu said, “We must start producing what we consume and end importation of what we have”. The future belongs to those who build, not those who just consume imported goods and services. The Nigeria First Policy is our national call to build-together, for the greater success of our country.
