FG Fulfills 30-Year-Old Promise, Allocates Houses To 1994 Super Eagles AFCON Winners

The Federal Government has fulfilled a 30-year-old promise by allocating houses to members of Nigeria’s 1994 Super Eagles team, winners of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia.
This was confirmed on Wednesday in a statement by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, which said the housing allocations were made under the National Housing Programme (NHP).
“The promise made in 1994 by the Federal Government, then under the leadership of Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has now been fulfilled,” the statement said. “Each member of the victorious Super Eagles team has now been allocated a house, in line with the original commitment.”
The 1994 squad, considered one of the greatest in Nigerian football history, won the AFCON and later became the first Nigerian team to qualify for and reach the Round of 16 at a FIFA World Cup. Key players in the team included the late Rashidi Yekini and Stephen Keshi, as well as Austin Okocha, Sunday Oliseh, Daniel Amokachi, and Emmanuel Amuneke.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, described the move as a necessary act of national honor.
“This action demonstrates our commitment to honoring those who have served this nation with distinction. It is never too late to do the right thing,” he said.
While details remain unclear on how many original squad members or next of kin of deceased players have received keys, officials confirmed efforts were made to contact all eligible beneficiaries.
One of the beneficiaries, former striker Efan Ekoku, was presented with an allocation letter for a house in Abuja.
The development has been welcomed by stakeholders and sports fans, who have long called for the government to recognize and reward the contributions of former national athletes.
