The Federal Government has attributed Wednesday’s national grid collapse, which occurred at about 11:20 a.m., to the tripping of a power generation company.

In a statement, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), which manages the country’s national grid, explained that the incident triggered a significant load drop that cascaded to other GenCos, causing a system-wide disturbance.

According to NISO, restoration efforts began at 11:45 a.m., starting with supply from the Shiroro Power Plant to Abuja, with substantial progress made in restoring electricity across the country by evening.

The agency disclosed that an investigation is ongoing to determine both the immediate and remote causes of the collapse.

“The disturbance was caused by the tripping of a GenCo, resulting in a significant load drop, which cascaded to other GenCos, leading to a system disturbance. NISO immediately commenced restoration of the grid at 11:45 hrs, beginning with supply to Abuja from the Shiroro power plant, and substantial restoration has been achieved across the country. A full investigation into the immediate and remote causes is underway. The outcome will determine remedial and proactive actions to forestall future occurrences. We crave your indulgence to bear with us as restoration is still ongoing,” the statement read.

As of Wednesday evening, power supply had been restored in parts of Abuja and several other locations.
