FCT Polls: Wike Praises Tinubu, Says Election Defines Nigeria’s True Political Divide

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as the peaceful and credible conduct of the Saturday Area Council elections in Abuja, declaring that the outcome has clearly shown Nigerians “the ruling party and the real opposition party” in the country.
The statement was signed by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, on February 22, 2026.
In a special broadcast aired on national television and radio stations on Sunday evening, the Minister said the successful conduct of the polls demonstrated the commitment of FCT residents to democracy and good governance.
Wike noted that the elections had once again exposed what he called the “hypocrisy” of politicians who attempt to deceive voters with superficial campaign stunts.
“The residents of the FCT demonstrated that they cannot be deceived by emergency democrats, who have chosen not to see anything good in our country and its government,” he said.
The Minister expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for what he described as unprecedented development in the FCT, stating that the election outcome reflected the President’s vision and leadership.
According to him, the results were a testament to the impact of the Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said has restored optimism and confidence among residents.
Wike also congratulated the victorious parties — the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) — for their performance at the polls, noting that the exercise reaffirmed the structure of Nigeria’s political landscape.
“This election has indeed shown that Nigerians now know the ruling party and the real opposition party,” he stated.
He commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting what he described as a free, fair and credible election, attributing the success to President Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and improving the electoral process, including amendments to the Electoral Act.
The Minister further praised security agencies for ensuring a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the elections.
Addressing the winners, Wike urged them to serve with humility, dedication and a strong commitment to improving the lives of residents across the six Area Councils, particularly in satellite towns.
He also thanked FCT residents for turning out in large numbers to vote peacefully, describing their participation as a reaffirmation of trust in Nigeria’s democratic process.
“As an administration, we pledge to continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to FCT residents, in accordance with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President,” he assured.
