Expert Advises Youths To Embrace Agriculture As Discipline

An expert in the field of Agriculture and the Head of Public Relations Unit at the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Ibadan, Oyo State, Dr. Adeniyi Amusat has called on the youths to embrace Agricultural-related disciplines so as to boost food security in the country.
Dr. Amusat disclosed this while delivering a lecture as guest lecturer during the 2025/26 matriculation of new students of the institute, which took place at the lecture theater of the Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan.
He said that agriculture will be in high demand and continue to be sought after, saying that the survival of the nation will continue to depend on it.
While delivering the lecture with the theme “Agriculture As a Profession: Pathway To Prosperity,” Dr. Amusat  stated that the matriculating students has a very lot of things to gain which he said include internship, industry specific training, and hands on experience.
While enumerating the college’s achievements in its over 100 years of existence, Dr. Amusat hinted that many prominent scholars that are shaping the nation’s agricultural sector passed through the Institution and that the college is not relenting in producing more graduates, who will be ready to take the country to a higher level in terms of food production.
“I want you to know that it is highly advantageous to begin your journey toward becoming a seasoned agriculturist in this college.
“Many, who have walked this path before you continue to count themselves fortunate for the early training they received here, which paved the way for their successes.
“There are vast opportunities available in agriculture – a field that is crucial to Nigeria’s growth and development.
“Like I earlier mentioned, agriculture is more than just farming, it’s a dynamic profession that encompasses various fields like agribusiness, agronomy, agricultural engineering, animal science, crop science, agricultural extension, economics and environmental management.
 “With Nigeria’s growing population and increasing demand for food security, your skills will always be in high demand. Agriculture is a profession that will continue to be sought after because the survival of our nation will continue to depend on Agriculture,” he said.
In his welcome address, the Provost of the College, Professor Jonathan Atungwu urged the matriculating students to obey the rules and regulations of the College.
He also admonished them to be of good behaviour during their stay and reiterate the positive contributions of the alumni of the College, while also charging them to do more for the Institution.
The event had in attendance the Zonal Director of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Ibadan office, Mrs. Temitope Akintola, who was represented by Mr. Oladele Daramola.
In her goodwill message, Akintola  admonished the students to be dedicated and committed to their studies and enjoined the management of the college to continue to adhere to JAMB admission rules and ethics.
Also in attendance was the Commander of NDLEA, Oyo Command, Adetula Oluwarotimi, who was represented by Mr. Jeff Achichi (Chief Superintendent Narcotics, NDLEA Oyo Command), who used the moment to introduce the mission of the Agency and enjoined the students to desist from illicit drugs, which he said could not only damage their lives, but decimate the good image of the country internationally.
Among other dignitaries in attendance were a former Provost, FCA, Ibadan, Dr. Elizabeth Augustus; Deputy Director of IAR&T, Professor Johnson Adetumbi; FCA Alumni President, Dr. Emmanuel Bankole, represented by the treasurer, Alhaji Solarin Olufemi; Oyo State Rep., FCA Alumni, Ibadan, Mr. Akintola Opeyemi; other principal officers of the College; Deans of School; Heads of Department; Prof. Olutayo Adeniyan (IAR&T); Dr. Popoola (IAR&T), Station Manager, IAR&T, Ibadan, Mr. Olabode S. O.; Official of JAMB, Mrs. Halima Olosho; Chief Superintendent Narcotics, NDLEA Oyo Command, Mrs. Godwin Mercy; IAR&T Public Relations Staff; members of AATON, Chairman, Ceremonial Committee and Dr. Fato Bukola.
The College Registrara was represented by Mrs Olanike Popoola.
Dr. Adeniyi Suraju Amusat, the guest lecturer was born into the family of the late Mr. Mufutua & Alhaja Abeke Amusat of Gbenla compound in Ibadan, Nigeria.
He had his secondary education at the popular Bishop Philips Academy, Ibadan, where he served as an agricultural prefect in his final year.
He proceeded to the School of Agriculture, Akure and School of Agriculture, Ibadan (now Federal College of Agriculture, Akure and Ibadan respectively).
He began his journalism career by obtaining Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication from The Polytechnic Ibadan. He also obtained Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication and Media Technology at Lead City University and bagged the Award of Best Student in  the Faculty with a First Class.
He later had a Masters degree in Communication and Language Art from Faculty of Art, University of Ibadan.
Dr. Amusat, in his quest for advanced knowledge, went back to the premier University and obtained M.Sc and PhD in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ibadan.
Adeniyi started his agricultural extension career at Oyo North Agricultural Development Programme (ONADEP) in 1985 after obtaining ND in General Agriculture. He also worked with the Oyo State Agricultural Development Program (A World Bank assisted Project).
He later joined the service of IAR&T/Obafemi Awolowo University, Moor Plantation, Ibadan in 1995 as an Agricultural Superintendent.
On resumption, he was posted to the Information Unit of Agricultural Extension Research & Liaison Unit.
He was appointed as a pioneer Public Relations Officer in 2006, the appointment he holds till date.
After obtaining M.Sc in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development in 2013, he got a new appointment in the Institute as Research Fellow II in 2017 and rose through the ranks to the position of Principal Research Fellow/Associate Professor (Agricultural Extension& Rural Development) in the famous Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
Dr Amusat is happily married to Mrs Titilola Amusat, a Director in the Oyo State Local Government Service and the marriage is blessed with God fearing children.
Dr. Amusat however, promised to sustain his AS Amusat Gbenla Award for the Best Graduating Student in Agricultural Extension.
To appreciate God from his humble beginning till date, he pledged to pay the tuition fee of any of the matriculating students that emerges as the best student in Agricultural Extension in second year.
