Malami Meets EFCC Investigators, Released After Hours Of Questioning

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday interrogated former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, over multiple allegations arising from his tenure. He was released on bail after several hours of questioning.
In a statement posted on X, Malami confirmed his release and described his interaction with investigators as “successful,” noting that he has been scheduled to return for “further engagement.”
“In line with my undertaking to keep Nigerians updated on my invitation by the EFCC, I give glory to Allah for His divine intervention,” he wrote. “The engagement was successful and I am eventually released while on an appointment for further engagement as the truth relating to the fabricated allegations against me continue to unfold.”
Malami had earlier acknowledged receiving the EFCC summons, stressing his commitment to honour it as a law-abiding citizen and as someone who advocates transparency in public service.
“I hereby reaffirm my commitment to honour the invitation. I understand the spirit of accountability and transparency in public service — principles that I both advocate and champion,” he said, assuring Nigerians that he would continue to provide updates as the process unfolds.
Malami served as Attorney-General from 2015 to 2023. His tenure has come under scrutiny for several high-profile and controversial transactions, including:
- The $496 million payment to Global Steel Holdings Ltd (GSHL) as settlement for the Ajaokuta Steel concession, years after the company had waived its compensation claims.
- The sale of forfeited assets worth billions of naira seized from politically exposed persons.
- The $419 million judgment debt awarded to consultants linked to the Paris Club refund process.
- The agreement to pay Sunrise Power $200 million in compensation over the Mambilla power project dispute.
- Legal fees associated with the repatriation of $321 million in Abacha loot from Switzerland.
These issues remain central to the EFCC’s ongoing probe into alleged misconduct during his period as the nation’s chief law officer
