Cup Shock: Amorim’s United Humbled By Grimsby

Published

Rúben Amorim suffered the most embarrassing defeat of his Manchester United reign as his side were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two underdogs Grimsby Town.

On a raucous night at Blundell Park, United were stunned by first-half goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren, leaving the visitors chasing shadows. Brief hope arrived when Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire hauled the tie level, forcing penalties. But the shootout turned into a nightmare.

Matheus Cunha spurned the chance to win it with a limp spot kick, easily saved by Christy Pym. The marathon shootout was finally settled when Mbeumo, back at the spot for a second time, clipped the crossbar — sealing a famous night for Grimsby and a humiliating exit for United.

Amorim could not even bring himself to watch the penalties. The symbolism was brutal: United’s two Premier League signings this summer, brought in to inspire a revival, were the ones to falter when it mattered most.
