In a decisive ruling on Wednesday, Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to release prominent businesswoman, Aisha Achimugu, on bail under the conditions previously set by the Commission.

Achimugu, who is under investigation for alleged conspiracy, money laundering, obtaining by false pretence, corruption, and unlawful possession of properties, was arrested on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. She was presented before the court the following day.

The court was informed that the EFCC had earlier revoked her initial administrative bail, which had been granted through her legal counsel, and subsequently imposed fresh conditions.

Her counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Kehinde Oguwumiju, attempted to request a variation of the new bail terms. However, the application faced stiff opposition from EFCC counsel E.E. Iheanacho, SAN, and was ultimately withdrawn after the court declined the request.

Justice Ekwo, in a brief but firm ruling, directed the EFCC to expedite all processes necessary to ensure Achimugu’s release under its bail terms. He further instructed all parties to report back to the court on the level of compliance on May 2, 2025.

The case has drawn attention due to the high-profile nature of the suspect and the serious allegations involved, marking another significant moment in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against financial crimes.
