COAS Recounts Own Battle Injury, Assures Wounded Soldiers Of Total Support In Maiduguri

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu, has reassured wounded Nigerian soldiers of the Army’s unwavering commitment to their welfare, pledging that no personnel injured in the line of duty will be abandoned.
Shuaibu gave the assurance on Thursday during a morale-boosting visit to injured troops receiving treatment at the Maimalari Cantonment Medical Centre in Maiduguri, Borno State.
His visit came amid concerns among wounded personnel and internally displaced persons (IDPs) following renewed insurgent attacks in parts of the North East.
In an emotional address to the recuperating soldiers, the Army Chief recalled his own experience of being wounded in combat during the height of the Boko Haram conflict, revealing that he was once treated in the same hospital.
“I was once like you. I was brought to this same hospital when I was wounded in battle. I understand what you are going through,” he said.
General Shuaibu commended the troops for their courage and sacrifice, assuring them that the Nigerian Army remains fully committed to their recovery, welfare, and long-term rehabilitation.
“I want to assure you of our total support to enable you recuperate fully. Your sacrifices will not be in vain,” he pledged.
He further disclosed that ongoing military operations will now place greater emphasis on troop safety and welfare, including faster medical evacuation, improved healthcare response, and adequate compensation for injured personnel.
The COAS also urged the wounded troops to remain strong and courageous, describing their resilience as an inspiration to serving soldiers across the country.
Some of the injured personnel expressed gratitude for the visit, noting that it restored their confidence and sense of belonging within the Army family.
