Casualties Rises In Sahel-Backed Militants Attack As Over 160 People Massacred, Emir Missing, Two Wives, Children, Chief Imam, Headmaster Killed

More disturbing details have emerged on a deadly attack by suspected Sahel-backed militants on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State. The militants were allegedly connected to Sadiku-led Boko Haram faction. National Pilot findings revealed that more than 160 people were massacred including two wives of the Emir, his children, Chief Imam of Woro, a school principal and a headmistress. Students who arrived home from school were also killed.
Authoritative sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the Emir of Woro, Alhaji Saliu Bio Umar, still missing after the attackers overran the community. The monarch’s vehicle was allegedly seized and used by the assailants to transport some abducted victims to unknown destinations.
“Over 160 people were killed, the Chief Imam was killed. The Emir is missing, his two wives and some of his children have beeb killed. The Emir’s place was set ablaze too,” the source said.
The source added that some passersby travelling through the area to other destinations were also killed, noting that “they were killing anyone they met.”
It was further revealed that aside from the Tuesday evening onslaught, the militants suspected to be Fulani, allegedly returned to Woro on Wednesday morning, where several additional residents were killed. Some individuals who had travelled from Ilorin to Woro for farming and trading activities were also said to have fallen victim to the tragedy as some of people throats were slit.
Findings revealed that the attack is linked to earlier tensions between the community and a group described as Sadiku-led Boko Haram faction. Few months back, the group attempted to compel residents to attend sermons and adopt their teachings. The Emir was said to have declined participation and had alerted Nigerian military authorities to the group’s activities, including allegations of coercion and forced preaching.
Following the Emir’s refusal, the militants reportedly launched a large-scale assault on the community on Tuesday night. It was disclosed that military personnel responded to distress calls but were forced to carry out a tactical retreat due to the overwhelming number of attackers, said to be more than 200 fighters.
The news of the massacre has triggered widespread fear in neighbouring communities, including Kaiama town, where residents are said to be living in heightened caution amid concerns that the violence could spread.
