BREAKING:Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar Resigns On Health Grounds

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health reasons.

In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the 63-year-old minister informed the President of his decision to step down. President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for Badaru’s service and contributions to the nation’s security architecture.

A statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, noted that the President is expected to communicate a new nominee for the position to the Senate later this week.

Badaru Abubakar, a former two-term governor of Jigawa State (2015–2023), was appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023. His exit comes at a time the President has declared a national security emergency, with further details on the scope of the emergency expected soon.

The Presidency thanked the outgoing minister for his dedication and wished him a full and speedy recovery.
