President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday formally decorated Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu with his new rank as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) at the State House, Abuja.

The decoration ceremony formed part of an expanded swearing-in event attended by senior government officials, members of the Federal Executive Council, top security chiefs, and aides of the President.

With the formal investiture, Disu becomes Nigeria’s 23rd Inspector-General of Police, marking a significant transition in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

Disu’s appointment follows the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, whose exit was confirmed on Tuesday. The Presidency stated that Egbetokun stepped down citing personal and family considerations.

President Tinubu, while decorating the new police chief, charged him with strengthening professionalism, discipline, and intelligence-driven policing across the country. He emphasised the need to restore and deepen public confidence in law enforcement while consolidating ongoing security reforms.

Before his elevation to acting IGP, Disu had served in several strategic capacities within the Force. Notably, he was appointed Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, in February 2021, succeeding Hakeem Odumosu.

As CP Lagos, Disu supervised policing in Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre during a delicate post-#EndSARS period marked by heightened security concerns, public scrutiny of the Force, and the need for operational recalibration. His tenure focused on crime control, intelligence coordination, and stabilising security across the state.

He also previously headed the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), where he led several high-profile operations targeting kidnapping, armed robbery, and organised crime networks.

Expectations Ahead

The Lagos-born 59-year-old officer now assumes national leadership at a time of complex security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, cybercrime, and communal unrest.

Security analysts say his experience in urban policing, intelligence-led operations, and crisis-era command in Lagos may shape his strategy as Acting IGP.

Among the immediate expectations are:

Reinforcing discipline within the Force

Expanding community policing nationwide

Enhancing inter-agency cooperation

Deploying intelligence-driven crime prevention strategies

Rebuilding public trust in policing institutions

His appointment is viewed as part of President Tinubu’s broader security recalibration under the Renewed Hope agenda.

With his formal decoration now complete, all eyes will be on Acting IGP Disu as he begins steering the Nigeria Police Force through a new chapter of reform and operational restructuring.
