Ali Khamenei, who had led the Islamic Republic since 1989, has died, according to Iranian state television.

In an official announcement, authorities declared a 40-day national mourning period and seven-day public holidays to honor the late Supreme Leader.

The extended mourning follows longstanding religious and cultural traditions observed in Iran after the death of prominent clerical figures.

State media reported that government offices, schools, and many businesses will close on designated days as part of the nationwide observance.

Funeral arrangements and memorial ceremonies are expected to draw large crowds, with religious leaders and state officials overseeing the proceedings.

Khamenei, who assumed leadership after the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, was one of the Middle East’s longest-serving leaders and played a central role in shaping Iran’s domestic and foreign policies for more than three decades.
Further details regarding succession and official burial ceremonies are expected in the coming days.
