Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), has passed away at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, marking the end of a distinguished judicial career.

The news of his death was confirmed in an official condolence statement by the Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS), National Headquarters, Abuja, on December 16, 2025. The association described his passing as “a monumental loss to the Nigerian judiciary, the legal profession, the Muslim Ummah, and the nation at large.”

“To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return,” the statement read, highlighting Justice Muhammad’s legacy as “a towering figure of integrity, humility, and unwavering commitment to justice.”

During his tenure as CJN, he was known for his fairness, courage, and fidelity to the rule of law, leaving behind a judicial legacy that continues to inspire generations of legal practitioners. Beyond his role on the Bench, Justice Muhammad was a mentor to young Muslim law students, offering guidance and encouragement to future custodians of justice.

NAMLAS extended heartfelt condolences to his family, the Nigerian judiciary, and the nation, praying for the repose of his soul and for him to be granted “the highest abode in Jannatul Firdaus.”

Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad’s decades-long service to Nigeria’s judiciary has left an indelible mark on the country’s legal landscape.
