BREAKING: Ex-AGF Malami Under Fresh DSS Probe After Arms Reportedly Found In Kebbi Home

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN), is facing a fresh investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS) following the alleged discovery of arms and ammunition at his residence in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, multiple sources have confirmed.
The development comes as Malami is yet to perfect the bail conditions granted him by the Federal High Court in an ongoing corruption case being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Arms discovery triggers security probe
According to reports, the arms were allegedly uncovered during a search of Malami’s Kebbi home by EFCC operatives. However, because offences relating to illegal possession of arms fall outside the EFCC’s statutory mandate, the matter was handed over to the DSS, which has now opened a separate national security investigation .
While the exact quantity and type of weapons recovered have not been officially disclosed, security sources say the discovery was serious enough to warrant direct DSS intervention, marking a significant escalation in Malami’s legal troubles .
Bail not perfected, remains in custody
Malami, who was recently remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, has not yet met the bail conditions imposed by the court. Sources familiar with the case say the former minister has delayed perfecting his bail amid concerns that he could be immediately re-arrested by the DSS over the arms-related allegations once released from custody .
The EFCC has also dismissed circulating claims on social media suggesting that Malami had regained his freedom, insisting that he remains in detention pending fulfilment of bail requirements .
Mounting legal pressure
The fresh DSS probe adds to a growing list of legal challenges confronting the former justice minister. Only days earlier, a Federal High Court ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 properties allegedly linked to Malami and members of his family, valued at over N213 billion, and directed him to show cause why the assets should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government .
Malami is also standing trial alongside his wife and son over money-laundering and abuse-of-office charges, allegations he has consistently denied, describing them as politically motivated and baseless.
Security implications
Analysts note that DSS involvement shifts the case from a purely financial-crime investigation to one with serious national security implications, as illegal possession of arms is treated as a grave offence under Nigerian law, often linked to terrorism and organised violence.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Malami nor the DSS has issued an official statement on the alleged arms discovery. However, security and legal observers say the outcome of the DSS probe could significantly reshape the former minister’s legal and political future.
More details are expected to emerge in the coming days as investigations continue.
