BBL Tragedy: Lagos Launches Probe Into Death Of Socialite Elena Jessica After Cosmetic Surgery

The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into the death of a Lagos socialite, popularly known as Elena Jessica, who reportedly died after undergoing cosmetic surgery in the state.
Elena is said to have died following a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure at a private clinic in Lagos, sparking widespread reactions on social media.
The state government disclosed that the probe is being carried out through the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), the body responsible for regulating and accrediting health facilities across Lagos.
In a statement issued on Thursday, March 12, 2026, the Permanent Secretary of the agency, Dr. Abiola Idowu, said the investigation was prompted by online reports alleging that the woman developed complications after the aesthetic procedure.
Idowu confirmed that the clinic involved is registered with HEFAMAA but stressed that such registration does not place any facility above scrutiny.
According to her, the agency will thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the procedure and the events that led to the woman’s death to determine whether proper medical standards were followed.
She reiterated the government’s commitment to patient safety, adding that any facility found to have violated medical regulations would face appropriate sanctions.
