Tragedy struck in Zamfara State on Sunday as armed bandits killed a staff member of Union Bank and abducted another along the Gusau–Funtua highway in Tsafe Local Government Area.

The incident occurred around 2:40 p.m. at Kucheri village when the assailants opened fire on a GAC SUG vehicle with registration number BDG 251 HZ. The vehicle was in motion at the time of the attack.

According to sources, the occupants of the vehicle were two bank officials: Zakari Leo, the regional manager of Union Bank Plc, and Muhammad Sani Suleman. Both were attached to the bank’s Yakubu Gowon Way branch in Kaduna State.

Security personnel were promptly mobilized to the scene. Following a search of the surrounding bushes, Mr. Leo was rescued alive. Mr. Suleman, who had sustained gunshot wounds, was rushed to the General Hospital in Tsafe and subsequently referred to the Ahmed Sani Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau. Unfortunately, he was confirmed dead before arrival.

The remains of the deceased have since been handed over to the management of Union Bank’s Gusau branch for burial arrangements.

The attack adds to the growing spate of insecurity in the North-West region, where criminal gangs continue to target highways, communities, and critical infrastructure
