Residents of Gaa Fulani community in Iye-Mero, Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State, were thrown into panic on Wednesday evening after armed bandits stormed the area, abducting several persons and carting away valuables. The attack, which occurred between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on December 3, 2025, prompted a swift response from local security operatives, resulting in a fierce exchange of gunfire and the eventual rescue of all kidnapped victims.

According to eyewitnesses, the bandits, who were reportedly in large numbers, invaded homes in the border settlement, forcing residents to surrender their belongings at gunpoint. Items stolen included mobile phones, ATM cards, cash, clothing, shoes, bags, jewelry, and wristwatches. The attackers also rounded up some community members before attempting to escape with them into the surrounding forest.

A local vigilante team, supported by other security agencies, immediately mobilised and intercepted the fleeing bandits, leading to a prolonged shootout. The intervention forced the kidnappers to abandon their captives and retreat deeper into the forest.

A community leader, who confirmed the development, described the attack as “terrifying,” noting that the community has repeatedly appealed for increased security presence due to the proximity of the area to forested terrains used as hideouts by criminal groups. “It was a terrible experience. They came in shooting and took people away. But we thank God the security men responded quickly,” he said.

Security operatives have since intensified patrols in the area, while a manhunt is ongoing to apprehend the attackers. Authorities also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements.

The Ekiti State Police Command is expected to issue a formal statement on the incident, even as community members continue to count their losses and call for lasting security measures to forestall further attacks.
