The appointment of Assistant Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Ridwan Disu, as Acting Inspector General of Police has attracted widespread commendation across Nigeria, with political leaders, security stakeholders and citizens from different ethnic, regional and political backgrounds describing the decision as widely accepted and timely.

Observers say the development has generated rare national consensus, as voices across party lines and tribal affiliations have expressed confidence in Disu’s professional record and operational experience. Many commentators noted that positive reactions have come from across the country, reflecting broad approval of the leadership choice.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been widely praised for what supporters describe as a well-considered appointment, with many Nigerians saying the President was “spot on” in selecting an officer viewed as disciplined, experienced and results-driven.

Disu, a Lagos Island indigene, joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as an Assistant Superintendent of Police and has since built a career spanning more than three decades in intelligence, operations and administration.

Before his elevation, he served as Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, beginning in February 2026. He previously headed the Special Protection Unit at Force Headquarters, Abuja, between March 2025 and February 2026 and also served within the Federal Capital Territory Police Command from October 2024 to March 2025.

His service record includes leadership as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State from November 2023 to October 2024, where he oversaw security management in one of Nigeria’s most complex operational environments. He also served as Commissioner of Police, Administration and Intelligence at the Force Intelligence Bureau.

Disu earlier headed the Intelligence Response Team as Deputy Commissioner of Police and served as Deputy Commissioner of Police for Administration and Operations at Force Headquarters. He gained national visibility during his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, a period associated with strengthened urban crime response and tactical policing.

His earlier assignments include service as Assistant Commissioner of Police at the Criminal Investigation Department in Rivers State, Officer in Charge of Anti-Kidnapping operations in Rivers, head of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad covering Ondo and Oyo states, Divisional Police Officer in Ondo State, training officer at the Nigerian Police Peacekeeping Department, and Directing Staff at the Nigerian Police Academy, Kano. In 1999, he served as Aide-De-Camp to former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Academically, Disu holds multiple postgraduate qualifications, including master’s degrees in Entrepreneurship and in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology, alongside an Advanced Diploma in Forensic Investigation and Criminal Intelligence, a Master’s degree in Public Administration and a Postgraduate Diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies.

He belongs to several professional organisations, including the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management and the National Association of Investigative Specialists in the United States.

During his career, Disu has earned numerous recognitions for operational leadership and crime control. He was named Best Commissioner of Police at the 2024 Inspector General of Police Recognition Awards, while the Lagos Rapid Response Squad under his leadership received regional recognition as the Most Outstanding Urban Crime Control Police Command in West and Central Africa in 2019. He was also honoured as Most Outstanding Police Operational Officer in West Africa and Africa in 2016 and named Man of the Year by the Crime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria in 2018.

He also led the first Nigerian Police contingent deployed under the African Union Mission in Sudan in 2005 to support peace operations in Darfur. Outside policing, Disu holds a third dan black belt in judo, serves as National Chairman of the Nigeria Police Judo Association and won a silver medal at the 2022 US Open Judo Championships.

With commendations continuing to pour in nationwide, many observers say his appointment represents a moment of uncommon unity, with Nigerians across political and ethnic lines expressing optimism that his leadership will strengthen professionalism and public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
