AIU lifts Tobi Amusan’s suspension, finds her not guilty of doping violation
The Athletics Integrity Unity (AIU) has exonerated Tobi Amusan of any breach of anti-doping regulations.
In an announcement made on Thursday, AIU confirmed that the suspension imposed on Tobi Amusan has been immediately lifted, following a provisional suspension that was enacted in July. This suspension stemmed from allegations of “missing three tests in 12 months.”
World Athletics revealed that Tobi Amusan’s case had been transferred to a disciplinary tribunal, which has now rendered a “majority decision.” This ruling asserts that Amusan did not commit an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) related to three instances of whereabouts failures within a 12-month timeframe.
Previously, this situation led to Tobi Amusan’s exclusion from the 26-member team designated by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for the 2023 World Athletics Championships. On the World Athletics official roster for the event, Amusan’s name was accompanied by a note indicating her participation hinged on the outcome of her case with AIU.
As a result of this latest decision, Tobi Amusan is cleared to compete and defend her women’s 100m hurdles title at the upcoming 2023 World Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19 to 27.
Despite this ruling, Brett Clothier, the head of AIU, indicated that they will carefully review the rationale behind the tribunal’s decision and determine whether to exercise their right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) within the stipulated time frame.
