Rufai Vs Umahi: Tramping On Ethical, Professional And Moral Codes

The recent clash on Arise TV between anchor Rufai Oseni and Minister Dave Umahi exposed deep fractures in the practice of professional broadcast interviewing and guest conduct in Nigeria.

Issues and Conflicts
The exchange quickly moved from probing public accountability on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project to a contest of egos and decorum.

Oseni, 45—demanding clear answers on project financing—became visibly agitated and said to 62-year-old Umahi, “If you can just keep quiet and be calm and allow me to speak.”

In Nigerian culture, where respect for elders is paramount, such a direct command from a younger person to an elder is regarded as disrespectful and escalated tensions. Besides, telling a guest to “keep quiet” is an ethical summersault.

Umahi intensified the conflict with remarks like, “You are too small for me to report you to the President. Who are you?” and “Keep quiet!” His response, untenable in its framing, appears driven by frustration in the failure of Oseni to recognize the positive dimensions of the project.

These personalized dismissals violated basic respect owed by public officials.

Both men raised their voices and resorted to patronizing language, falling short of the professionalism and comportment their roles demand.

Role Overreach and Ethical Breaches
Minister Umahi dismissed some of Oseni’s questions as “elementary,” yet in journalism, no question is “stupid.” Journalists must ask respectfully and professionally; guests must respond appropriately.

During the same interview, Umahi was noticeably calmer when addressing other journalists, indicating his harsh reaction was triggered by Oseni’s confrontational style.

Sadly, the controversy overshadowed Umahi’s substantial points about Winhomes, loan details, and ongoing road projects nationwide, resulting in a loss to public understanding and discourse.

Patterns of Tension
This confrontation was not isolated. Oseni’s assertive, sometimes accusatory style has previously triggered charged moments with guests.

While rigorous questioning is crucial, repeated confrontations risk undermining constructive public discourse.

Conclusion
Both Oseni and Umahi trampled on professional, ethical, and cultural codes. Oseni’s command was culturally insensitive and abrupt; Umahi’s retaliations were dismissive and disrespectful.

This incident is a poignant reminder of the vital need for maintaining ethical, professional, and cultural standards in public discourse, especially in the pursuit of accountability from public officials.
