NAFDAC Seals Chinese Supermarkets, Cosmetics Shops In Abuja Over N170m Illegal Products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed two Chinese-owned supermarkets in Abuja’s Jabi District and eight cosmetics shops in Wuse Market for selling unregistered and unsafe products valued at over N170 million.

The enforcement exercise, carried out under the directive of NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, was led by Mr. Musa Embugushiki. Officials discovered that the supermarkets, located on Mike Akhigbe Way and Ebitu Ukiwe Street, stocked food items labeled only in Chinese—contravening the agency’s requirement that all products sold in Nigeria must carry English labeling. Though one operator denied the allegations, surveillance confirmed the stores were actively distributing unapproved goods.

At Wuse Market, eight cosmetics shops were shut down for selling banned, expired, and unregistered beauty products, including dangerous aphrodisiacs and body-enhancement items. Seized goods included Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Skin Whitening Gummies, and other unregulated medicines marketed by individuals posing as dermatologists and pharmacists.

Prof. Adeyeye warned that such products are linked to life-threatening conditions including cancer, kidney failure, and neurological disorders. She advised Nigerians to patronize only NAFDAC-approved items and urged foreign businesses to comply with Nigeria’s regulatory standards.

While stressing that NAFDAC welcomes genuine investment, Embugushiki vowed the agency would intensify crackdowns on illegal products to safeguard public health.
