Lagos Lawmakers Celebrate Nigeria At 65 …Say Tinubu Has Moved The Nation Forward Economically

Lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday during plenary took turns to celebrate Nigeria as the nation marks her 65th Independence Anniversary on Wednesday October 1, 2025.
The matter was raised as a Matter of Urgent Public Importance by the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Hon Noheem Adams, who recalled that the nation gained independence on October 1, 1960.
Adams stated that the struggle for independence started in 1900 by the late Herbert Macaulay, while the late Chief Anthony Enahoro moved the motion for independence on the floor of the House of Assembly in 1953.
The lawmaker then commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who he said staked his life to recover the economy of the country.
“Our economy is gaining strength and inflation is reducing. We have cause to celebrate our independence.
“I also commend you as the Speaker of the House for being part of the success story of Nigeria as the them Chairman of the Conference of Speakers that saw to the implementation of financial autonomy for state house of assemblies.
“We should write a letter to the President of Nigeria for his role in nation building, write the National Assembly, commend Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his efforts in developing Lagos State, commend Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa and the civil societies,” he said.
In his comments, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu said that on October 1, 1960, the flag of the country was unveiled and the country became a republic in 1963.
Yishawu recalled that the late Abubakar Tafawa Balewa became the nation’s Prime Minister and Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe became the President.
“Today, the economy is recovering, students loan, tax reforms and others are part of the success stories of the country. In Lagos State, we have made laws on transportation, security, and others. Lagos has done well over the years, ” he said.
Also speaking, Hon Aro Moshood, said that Nigeria’s freedom in 1960 is one of the best things to happen to the nation.
He said that it’s not just about history, but that it’s about the spirit of unity, courage and progress.
According to him, “65 years after, Nigeria remains blessed with people of diverse culture and talents. In Lagos, we see how our diversity can be a source of strength everyday.
“We must ensure justice and development for all. We are blessed to have President Bola Tinubu giving us hope as a nation. We should rededicate ourselves to the service to the nation.”
In his contributions, Hon Steven Ogundipe, said that the nation must raise its voice in gratitude to pay tributey to Nigeria at 65.
He said; “We praise our leaders who carried the touch and we appreciate the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu who stood firm when things were going wrong for the country. Even when he was outside the country, he still fought for the country to remain one. Let us renew our commitment to envision a stronger and united Nigeria.”
Hon Ladi Ajomale, who also spoke on the matter, said that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is one of the super heroes of the country.
He stated that Tinubu later emerged the Governor of Lagos State after military rule and that the state has been making progress since then.
“His emergence as President has been beneficial. He reintroduced the old National Anthem, which speaks to unity, service, loyalty and patriotism. Happy birthday to Nigeria and independence day to us all,” he said.
While contributing, Hon Foluke Osafile, said that there are few countries that are as blessed as Nigeria in human and natural resources.
She said that the challenges the nation is passing through are transient, but that the nation will surely reach her promised land, adding that “with God on our side, our case as a nation shall not be impossible.”
Hon Kehinde Joseph, in his comments, congratulated Nigeria at 65, saying that Nigerians have everything reason to celebrate with what God has done for them.
“We passed through the annulment of June 12 Presidential Election, but since 1999 we have been enjoying democracy.
“We thank God for President Bola Tinubu for the Renewed Hope Agenda. We have recorded many progress.
“Nigerians in the Diaspora should not condemn the country even if they cannot commend us. In Lagos State, we are making progress and the assembly has been able to stabilise the state,” he said.
Also speaking, Hon Ajani Owolabi, said that the nation should reflect on her journey as a people.
Hon. Owolabi stated that 65 years ago, the nation’s founding fathers got independence for Nigeria.
He said that Lagos, as the heartbeat of the country, has been doing her best to ensure the progress of the country.
He said that this is a call to duty to build a nation that will be beneficial to everybody, saying that the nation’s development is not in parade, but in giving Nigerians quality lives.
A second motion was moved by Hon Steven Ogundipe, who commended the Lagos Police Command and the state Commissioner of Police, CP Jimoh Moshood, for their responses to security issues in the state.
Ogundipe recalled that officers of the Lagos State Police Command acted swiftly to a robbery incident on Allen Avenue where a businessman was robbed in daylight.
He said that the suspect was arrested in Epe later by men of the Lagos State Police Command.
“We need to work more on our community awareness on security. We need proactive preventions and we should have safety protocols in our schools and engage more with our security personnel.
“We need to sustain our investment as Lagos is a growing megacity. So many states have been coming to Lagos to learn from us.
“We need to strengthen the roles of the social media. People believe that it is about negativity, but it can be used for positive purposes if harnessed well.
“We can work with the police and look at the security challenges in the state. We should all continue to strengthen the capacity of the Lagos State Police Command,” he said.
He also suggested that there should be a collaborative efforts by all stakeholders on security in the state.
He added that there should be proactive preventions, and safety protocols in school as well as sustained investment on security.
He said; “There should be more resources for policing in the state. The social media can be used positively for security. The State Commissioner of Police should liase with the assembly and rub minds with us on the how to secure the state. We should also write a letter to the state police command and commend them.”
The two motions were supported by all the lawmakers present through voice votes supervised by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa and taken as the resolutions of the House.
