Nigerian troops scored a major victory against insurgents on Monday when at least eight fighters of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), including two field commanders and a sector leader, were killed in Borno State.

Military intelligence sources revealed that the clash took place near Garin Giwa, close to Cross Kauwa, along the Maiduguri–Baga highway, after ISWAP fighters ambushed a patrol team.

Troops engaged the terrorists in a fierce firefight, leaving eight dead. Among those neutralised were two “Munzirs” (field commanders) and a “Qaid” (sector leader) identified as Modu Dogo, a commander from Dogon Chukun; an unnamed field commander; and Abu Aisha, a sector leader from Tumbun Mota.

The insurgents abandoned 14 motorcycles as troops overpowered them. Several others reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds.

Security analysts describe the encounter as the latest setback for ISWAP, whose operations around the Lake Chad Basin have come under increasing pressure from Nigerian military offensives.
