Nigeria’s qualification hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a major setback after star striker Victor Osimhen was ruled out of Tuesday’s high-stakes clash against group leaders South Africa.

The Team doctor  confirmed on Sunday that Osimhen sustained a chin bruise and woke up with discomfort, prompting medical advice that he should not travel with the squad to South Africa.

The development leaves Coach Eric Sekou Chelle with his  attacking options as he prepares his side for the must-win encounter, the battle for Nigeria’s frontline will now be between Tolu Arogundade, who scored the decisive winner as a substitute in the Super Eagles’  win against Rwanda yesterday and Cyril Dessers, who is pushing for a starting role.

South Africa currently tops Group C with 16 points, while Nigeria sits third, with 10 points, a point behind Benin Republic. The Super Eagles must avoid defeat in South Africa to keep their qualification hopes alive, with only a handful of games left to play.

Despite the blow of losing their star striker, optimism remains in camp. Officials reassured fans that Osimhen’s injury is not long-term, and he should return to action after a short recovery period.
